Notes:

The model for this painting is Lottie Stafford, a Cockney laundress whose naturalness and warm sensuality made her a popular model with other artists, including Augustus John, Walter Sickert and William Orpen who especially admired her ‘swanlike’ neck. Nicholson creates no narrative, but invites the viewer to invent one. The world weary, somewhat melancholic, sitter stares resignedly into space as she inconspicuously displays her gloves, damaged goods: a metaphor, perhaps, for her life?
