St Cloud lies a few kilometres to the south-west of Paris. Its park was designed by the architect Le Nôtre in order to take full advantage of its dramatic position.Turner frequently visited the town when in Paris; this drawing was probably made following his visit of 1832. It was engraved by William Miller in the first months of 1835 for Walter Scott’s ‘Life of Napoleon Bonaparte’, vol. XII of his Prose Works, published in April that year. Miller received £57.15s for his work. The château, seen at the top of the hill between the trees, was destroyed by fire whilst occupied by Prussian troops during the siege of 1870. Ruskin described this watercolour as a ‘very fine work of the middle time’. (Previous text from 'Ruskin's Turners' Exhibition Website). Engraved: W. Miller, 1835, for 'Life of Napolean' in Scott's 'Prose Works', vol. 12, 1834-6; repr. Finley, op. cit., fig. 66d.
