Notes:

Given by Ruskin as a view of Amboise, the town was subsequently identified as Nantes and has only recently been recognised as Ancenis-sur-Loire. The town served as the changing post for passengers who came on the steamer from Nantes, and transferred to a second boat to continue down river. Sketches of Ancenis appear in a Nantes, Anger and Saumur sketchbook in the Tate Gallery, used on his trip down the Loire in 1826. It was probably drawn around 1826-28. Like the view of Orléans, this drawing was acquired by Ruskin from Hannah Cooper, in this case in 1858. (Text from 'Ruskin's Turners' Exhibition Website).
