Provenance:

Imported into England in 1790 by Bradshaw Pearson, and sold to Francis, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater (1736-1803); bequeathed by him with a life-interest to his nephew, Lord Gower, later 2nd Marquis of Stafford and 1st Duke of Sutherland (1758-1833), with reversion to the Marquis' second son, Lord Francis Leveson-Gower, who changed his name to Egerton in 1833 and was created 1st Earl of Ellesmere in 1846; by descent to John Sutherland Egerton, 6th Duke of Sutherland and Trustee of the Ellesmere 1939 Settlement; sold by order of the Trustees, Christie's, 2 July 1976, lot 83, repr. in colour, bt. Thos. Agnew & Sons on behalf of an American client; bought by the Museum after the application for an export licence was withheld on the recommendation of the Reviewing Committee, for three months initially with an extension of a further month

With the Abbott, Cunliffe, Leverton Harris, Marlay, Perceval University Purchase and the Duplicate Objects Funds, after a public appeal through the Friends of the Fitzwilliam, which raised an anonymous donation of £100,000 and contributions from the National Art Collections Fund, the Pilgrim Trust, the Radcliffe Trust, the Rayne Foundation, the Monument Trust, various Cambridge Colleges and the Victoria and Albert Museum Grant-in-Aid.
