The miniature and its mount would originally have been fitted in the lid of a box, but the box and its lid are missing. It was once attributed to Francois Jean Garnerey (painted the portrait) and Cornelis van Spaendonck (painted the floral wreath) and the profile was once thought to depict Marie Antoinette, due to a label on the back, but this is no longer accepted. See exhibition catalogue by Margriet van Boven.
