Notes:

From the 1511 Latin edition of the Apocalypse with the letterpress text of chapter fourteen on the reverse. The image derives from verses in chapter nine with the events summoned by the sixth trumpet. In the foreground are the four avenging angels of Euphrates. Above them, issuing from the clouds, Dürer depicts the plague of lion-headed horses, not according to the text with 'tails... like unto serpents', but with the 'tails like unto scorpions' belonging to the lion-toothed horse-shaped locusts summoned by the fifth trumpet, which were not otherwise illustrated by him (Duvet included these locusts with his illustration of the opening of the fifth and sixth seals).
