Late Medieval maiolica jug, painted in manganese and green with a cross potent on the front.
Yellowish-buff earthenware. The interior of the neck and the lower part are partly lead-glazed brownish-yellow; the rest is tin-glazed pale grey. Painted in dark manganese and copper-green.
Shape 11. Bulbous body with disk base, cylindrical neck, carinated rim, pinched spout and strap handle of D-section.
The front is decorated with a manganese cross potent inside a green circle.

The cross potent, taken from the arms of Jerusalem, was associated with the Knights Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem, who had many houses in central Italy. Luciano Ricetti, however, noted that the cross resembled the mark of Pietro di Meo di Ventura, camerario of the Opera del Duomo in Orvieto between 1464-1465. This jug could have been made for an earlier member of the family.
