Notes(s):
This is the only print in Barocci’s small but important printed oeuvre of four etchings that is not already in the Fitzwilliam’s collection. The Museum owns an incised drawing by Barocci (PD.7-1948), which is closely related to the composition of this print. It was a popular image with far-reaching influence. Annibale and Agostino Carracci each engraved copies of Barocci’s print soon after it appeared (Agostino’s is dated 1582). Rembrandt owned an album of prints including examples by Barocci, presumably including this one: he was clearly under its influence when he made his own print of the same subject in 1641.
