Sheets of metal, probably copper, have been cut to form the correct shape for the sides, lid and base of the box. These have been enamelled with grooves left to let in thin stripes of gold. The tortoiseshell lining has been carved, heated and pressed. The box was assembled with engraved gilt metal mounts pinned to the sides and the lining glued and pinned in place. The miniature has been painted in enamel on copper and set within a gold (or gilt metal) mount.
